Good Cake isn’t Cheap, Cheap Cake isn’t good, but…

Good cake isn’t cheap, Cheap cake isn’t good but…

I recently saw the statement “Good Cake isn’t cheap, Cheap cake isn’t good” and it struck a chord with me. The statement actually related to wedding cakes, but it made me think about homemade creations, and they can be good, great in fact, and they don’t have to be expensive.

This blog isn’t intended to recommend you make your own wedding cake, far from it but just my take on how cake can be homemade, delicious and not cost the earth, so here goes… Growing up there was always freshly baked cake in our house and my Nan’s to the point where you could say we were spoiled, but it was just something we thought everyone had. The smell of freshly baked cake was always so enticing and thankfully a tradition I have followed in my house (well it is a perk of the job I guess!).

Grasping the cake basics means whipping up a loaf cake or some cupcakes is quick, easy and in my humble opinion way better than shop bought. A close friend did tell me I had ruined going out for coffee for her as I always took freshly baked cake when I visited, whoops! The method I would always use is to weigh the eggs and then use the same amount of butter, sugar and flour and then add the flavouring of your. choice. For me, I always double the amount of flavouring that is recommended and if I can, I use fresh, for instance lemon cake is just zested unwaxed lemons (and limoncello if I want to be fancy) for vanilla is vanilla bean paste.

If you want to make a cake really quickly then my tip would be to buy a loaf tin and loaf tin liners and stick to a simple recipe, one you can remember without the need for a cookery book. I know that making a cake can seem time-consuming but if you just started with my simple method and a flavour you love then the recipe sticks in your head, and before you know it, you will be whipping up a cake and enjoying the delicious taste whilst filling your kitchen with the most amazing smells.

I do also owe it to my fellow cake makers though that when looking at the statement from the perspective of wedding cakes it is 100% true. I have covered in another blog what questions should you ask when searching for the perfect wedding cake as “Good Cake isn’t cheap, Cheap Cake isn’t good”.
